Mississauga winters are no joke. Cold starts, road salt, potholes, and ice put serious stress on your vehicle. Here is what to check before the temperature drops.
Battery
Cold weather reduces battery capacity by up to 50%. If your battery is over 4 years old or slow to start, test it before winter. A battery failure in -20°C is not just inconvenient — it can be dangerous.
Tires
In Ontario, winter tires are strongly recommended (and required for some insurers). All-season tires lose significant grip below 7°C. Check pressure monthly — tires lose 1 PSI for every 5-6°C drop in temperature.
Brakes
If your brakes were marginal going into fall, they will struggle in winter. Snow and ice dramatically increase stopping distances. Book a brake inspection before the first snowfall.
Coolant/Antifreeze
Ensure your coolant mixture is rated for Canadian winter temperatures. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water protects to approximately -37°C.
Lights
With shorter days and reduced visibility in snow, working lights are critical. Check all bulbs including brake lights and turn signals.
Wiper Blades
Switch to winter wiper blades before the first snowfall. Standard blades ice up and lose contact with the windshield.
