How Often Should You Change Your Oil in Canada?

One of the most common questions we get at Rankin Automotive is: how often do I actually need an oil change? The answer depends on your vehicle, driving habits, and the type of oil you use.

The Old Rule: Every 5,000 km

The old 5,000 km rule dates back to conventional oil and older engines. Most modern vehicles using full synthetic oil can go significantly longer.

Modern Recommendations by Vehicle Type

  • Full synthetic oil: 8,000–12,000 km or as indicated by your oil life monitor
  • Synthetic blend: 6,000–8,000 km
  • Conventional oil: 5,000–6,000 km

Canadian Conditions Matter

Our winters are hard on engines. Cold starts, short trips, and stop-and-go city driving in Mississauga and the GTA are considered severe duty conditions — meaning your oil degrades faster than highway driving in a warm climate. When in doubt, lean toward more frequent changes.

Trust Your Oil Life Monitor

Most vehicles built after 2010 have an oil life monitoring system. This calculates actual degradation based on your driving patterns. When it hits 15%, book your oil change.
