That orange glow on your dashboard can mean anything from a loose gas cap to a serious engine problem. Here are the most common check engine codes we see at Rankin Automotive and what they mean.
P0420 — Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold
This usually means your catalytic converter is failing or an oxygen sensor issue. Do not ignore it long-term — a failing cat can damage other components.
P0300-P0304 — Random/Specific Cylinder Misfire
Could be spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel injectors, or compression issues. A flashing check engine light with a misfire code means pull over — you can damage your catalytic converter driving on a misfire.
P0171/P0174 — System Too Lean
The engine is not getting enough fuel or getting too much air. Could be a vacuum leak, MAF sensor, fuel pump, or injector issue.
P0401 — EGR Flow Insufficient
Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve issue. Common on higher-mileage vehicles.
P0442/P0455 — EVAP Leak (Small/Large)
Often just a loose gas cap. Tighten it and clear the code. If it comes back, there is a leak in the evaporative emissions system.
P0011/P0014 — Camshaft Position Timing
Variable valve timing issue. Could be low oil, dirty oil, or a failing actuator. Check oil level first.
