One of the most common questions we get at Rankin Automotive is: how often do I really need an oil change? The answer has changed significantly over the past decade.
The Old Rule: 3,000 Kilometres
You have probably heard the old advice: change your oil every 3,000 km. That rule is outdated. It was relevant when conventional oil and older engines were the norm.
Modern Recommendation
Most modern vehicles with full synthetic oil can go 8,000 to 12,000 kilometres between oil changes — sometimes longer. Check your owner manual for your specific interval.
Signs You Need an Oil Change Sooner
- Oil life monitor reads below 15%
- Oil looks black and gritty on the dipstick
- Engine sounds noisier than usual
- Oil pressure warning light
