Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Knowing when to replace them and what to expect can save you money and keep you safe.
Signs Your Brakes Need Service
- Squealing or squeaking — most brake pads have wear indicators that make noise when they are getting low
- Grinding — metal on metal. Do not ignore this. It means pads are gone and rotors may be damaged
- Longer stopping distances — if you need more distance to stop, get your brakes checked immediately
- Vibration when braking — usually warped rotors
- Pulling to one side — could be a stuck caliper or uneven pad wear
Typical Brake Life
Front brake pads typically last 40,000 to 70,000 km depending on driving style and vehicle weight. Rear pads generally last longer. Rotors can often be resurfaced rather than replaced — but not always.
